Reference and User Services
PO5; PV 1: Reference and User Services
Artifact: Reference Collection Development Proposal
In LI813 Reference and User Services students are given an introduction to a wide variety of print and electronic reference sources and to examine current issues in the provision of reference services. Students learn effective ways to select information retrieval tools and resources, develop search strategies, and evaluate search results. This course examined theory of information seeking, first taught in LI802, and how to evaluate reference sources. Participating in a reference interview is part of the information search process, drawing on William Katz’s theory (1989) of communication during the reference interview in appropriate use of open and closed questions as a way to help guide users to appropriate sources. For this artifact I created a reference collection development proposal as a way to provide patrons with resources to fulfill a specific information need, in this case researching Yamhill County, Oregon genealogy. This assignment provided practice in selecting, evaluating, and synthesizing resources to fulfill an information needs assessment. A specific information need was defined for which resources were suggested and evaluated on how they met that need. It demonstrated my ability to retrieve, evaluate, and synthesize information resources to assist in a patrons’ specific information needs assessment.
